The Hugh Lane houses a significant collection of Irish and International modern and contemporary art. The original collection, donated by the Gallery's founder Sir Hugh Lane, has now grown to include almost 2000 artworks, ranging from the Impressionist masterpieces of Manet, Monet, Renoir and Degas to works by leading national and international contemporary artists. Marsh’s Library, situated in St. Patrick's Close, adjacent to St. Patrick's Cathedral, is a well-preserved library of the late Renaissance and early Enlightenment. When it opened to the public in 1707 it was the first public library in Ireland. Famous writers, such as, James Joyce and Bram Stoker were known for researching many of their works in Marsh’s Library.
